1957, Pretty Girl Police

Posted by The Progressive Journal in ,

Pageland Police Chief Floyd Cato inspects the "Pretty Girl Police," who were set to patrol the streets for the Barefoot and Apron Day event. Men who weren't barefoot and women not wearing an apron would be fined (this was part of the Watermelon Festival activities.) From left, the ladies are Judy Arant, Bonnie Clark, Margaret Medlin, Gail Griggs and Mary Nelle Watford (though their names probably changed since this photo was taken.)

This was always a fun day. I was a 'cop' one of the years and the TV station from Charlotte sent down a crew to film us sitting on a pile of watermelons. It showed on TV that evening. The women wore aprons but most men chose to wear shoes and pay the fine rather than walk barefooted on that scorching pavement. Four of these charming 'policemen' were my classmates.

One correction. It's Mary Nelle Watford. Typo in her middle name in the post.
